Zinc Oxide is a superior sunblock ingredient. It is completely stable when exposed to UV light. It does not produce by-products when exposed to heat and light, so it does not become toxic on the skin like many other sunscreen ingredients. When chemical blockers are applied and the skin is exposed to UV light, a sebaceous breakout can easily occur because of the toxicity of these other ingredients.
Today's sunscreens must not only protect their wearers from burning or tanning, but also from photoaging and the risk of skin cancer. They must contain a minimum of SPF 15 and must not irritate nor cause allergic reactions, breakout or eye irritation; nor feel greasy or heavy on the skin. They must be invisible when applied, maintain their full protection for the duration of the SPF level (e.g., an SPF 15 should provide complete protection for 150 minutes), and must not degrade under intense UV exposure.
